Sofia lives at a friend’s house who has been out of town for a while, until an uncomfortable message informs her that she must leave. Without a home to return to, she walks to the Sao Paulo University campus dragging her suitcases with a certain melancholy that is also reflected in the landscape. She sets up a makeshift tattoo parlor and tattoos a few clients to make some money.
The afternoon passes in the midst of ruminations and images of her loved one. The night exacerbates the loneliness and uncertainty of not having anywhere to return to. People wander around the university without much certainty, looking for a place to belong. This is a constant that speaks of a certain feeling of the times, a non-future accepted with indifference.
Sofia Foi is an austere film that is also careful with its process and narrative. The fixed camera carefully positions us close enough to touch or somewhere in the distance. The sound builds a tension with saturated ambience and anticipation. Sofia, both the screenwriter and protagonist, moves between fiction and personal experience, revealing parts of the universe that challenge her during a 24-hour journey.
