A man in a red robe walks barefoot through the streets of Washington D.C., attracting looks from passersby and piquing tourists’ curiosity.The camera steadily focuses on the character’s precise, meditative steps while the world around him carries on with the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In 2011, the renowned Taiwanese director began The Walker Series, 10 projects that invite you to stop and observe, to allow yourself to doubt, and to rebel against the rigidity and inflexibility of time. The tenth installment of this series, Abiding Nowhere, offers a journey through the streets of the capital city that invites the viewer to surrender to contemplation, discover the threshold that separates the human from the non-human, and unveil the time of matter, nature, and bodies of water, as well as examine the interior of structures and discover a liminal force within them. In this new inventory of settings and landscapes, Tsai Ming-Liang induces the viewer into a meditative and introspective experience where time merges with space.
