On the north coast of France, a family of fishermen supplements their meager income by ferrying people across the bay. Their passengers tend to be well-to- do tourists, but this year a series of disappearances has everyone on edge. Ma Loute is a comedy, but in the Dumont vein: one where happy endings and gooey characters have been replaced with a grotesque, “twisted” reality and caricature. It’s a genre that gives Dumont the freedom to take on a subject that would be harder or at the very least less palatable to treat“realistically”: that of a capitalist world in which the rich devour the poor and where, inthis case, the tables are literally turned. More dramatic than drama itself, once you buy into the rules of this absurd game, you can’t help but laugh at the antics of a collection of characters that will remain engraved forever in the memory of audiences: the pompous Inspector Machin, the dysfunctional Van Peteghem family, the beautiful Billie and hergender issues, and, of course, Ma Loute.
