Shocking, raw, violent, sordid, heartbreaking, brilliant. These are some of the many ways of describing what many critics say is Matteo Garrone’s best film (Gomorra, 2008). Acknowledged for his stellar performance – Best Actor in Cannes – Marcello Fonte has a small and somewhat sordid dog grooming shop. Behind his skinny and fragile appearance, he hides the excessive love he has for dogs and for his daughter. To supplement his scant income, he sells drugs. One of his clients is Simone, a giant, violent and addict delinquent who brings problems all throughout the neighborhood. Marcello maintains a kind of submissive friendship with him, one that is equal parts fear and admiration. It is only a matter of time before problems arise and the need to change and stop being the fearful man he was, almost becomes a matter of survival for Marcello. We always have options, the film tells us. Are we capable of evaluating the consequences of our choices? Is it worth it?
