SYNOPSIS

You can say much more in a film than you think is possible about a country and its people. After the fall of the Taliban, an old movie theater in Kabul reopens its doors. In addition to many wounds and injuries, 40 years of war have left the majority of its population illiterate. Those who have lived their whole lives in war do not know what the movies are, nor how to behave when going to see one. In a certain sense, movies in Kabul are a social event: their titles are touted in the streets, people run in to find a seat when the theater doors open, and the posters advertising them are painted by hand to cover the parts of the body that should not be seen. Outside the theater, life continues in a country that is far from living in peace. The movies are dangerous, and censorship is real. The mere act of bringing reels of film from Pakistan is to put your life at risk. But people do it because they love it: from the projectionist, to the head of security, to the theater manager. There is a lot of love for film amongst all who work at Cinema Pameer, a message that couldn’t be clearer with this beautiful and incredible tribute to it. Some films are full of unexpected beauty and learning experiences. This is one of them.
