Marina (Maribel Verdú) is a one-eyed pregnant prostitute who finally has a stroke of luck when she is rescued by Ramón the butcher (Antonio Resines) after being beaten up by her lover Daniel (Jordi Mollà) in the streets of Madrid in the middle of the night. Estrella is born and Marina and Ramón live a normal, happy family life until Daniel is released from jail and turns up on their doorstep. Lucky Star has the ring of a redeemed Cinderella, but there’s much more to it than that. A profoundly beautiful, heartrending film, it speaks of unconditional love that transcends convention and of how hard it can be to follow our hearts and make decisions that would appear to defy all logic. Winner of five Goyas, many consider this Ricardo Franco’s best film.
