According to tradition, to protect them from the evil eye, newborns should be wrapped from head to foot in a blanket for seven days. But when her son is born, Hana decides to forego what she sees as mere superstition. How the characters relate to their environment, their living conditions, traditions and mindset are at the core of Víctor González’s films, which, while fictional, have documentary value in that they depict customs, songs and rituals. Featuring amateur actors, the plot is interwoven with elements of the supernatural, the mythical and the mystical. This is a community that celebrates death as much as it does life and whose funeral rites are dominated by bunde rhythms. Over and beyond technique, El mal de los siete días is authentic, honest cinema with meaning and context, related by a natural-born storyteller.
