Bergman himself acknowledged on more than one occasion that Gun, the woman he had a passionate affair with in the Fifties, was the inspiration for many of the strong female characters in his films. In an attempt to either confirm or debunk the myth, Marie Nyneröd meets up with Ingmar Jr.—one of the five children Bergman abandoned when he ran off with Gun—to retrace the couple’s steps in Paris. Motivated by her curiosity about Bergman the man and Bergman the director, about his personal and public facets, Nyneröd brings us this fresh portrait in which art and the artist are two separate yet inextricable entities. All Bergman’s partners were strong, successful women who were more independent than most for their time. Gun left her mark on Bergman’s life and the lives of the children he abandoned for her, just as she left her mark on his films.
