SYNOPSIS

Filmed in black and white, Persépolis remains true to the comic it is based on—the autobiographical story of an Iranian woman by the name of Marjane Satrapi. In 1979, when the Islamic Revolution put Islamists in power, Marjane was just a child. Shortly afterwards, the world as she knew it changed completely. Burkas and censure became the norm and Marjane’s upper-class family sent her to Europe to be educated. Here, music and freedom fuel her critical spirit and stimulate her tireless intelligence. Despite the tragic moment in history in which the film is set, it retains a wonderful and typically Iranian sense of humor and lightness. A must-see example of European animation for adults.
